Social Studies

The social studies curriculum in Freehold Township provides students with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and perspectives needed to become contributing members of local, state, national, and global communities. The study of social studies focuses on deep understanding of concepts that enable students to think critically and systematically about local, regional, national, and global issues. Through the social studies curriculum, students are presented with authentic learning experiences that focus on providing students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to be active, informed, responsible individuals and contributing members of their communities. The K-8 social studies curriculum is centered around four strands of disciplinary concepts.

The strands are:

  • Civic, Government and Human Rights
  • Geography, People and the Environment
  • Economics, Innovation and Technology
  • History, Culture and Perspectives

These core ideas help to prioritize the important ideas and processes that are central to a discipline and have lasting value beyond the classroom. Over the course of the school year students engage in authentic texts, primary and secondary sources, and participate in learning experiences that foster their ability to be civic-minded, globally aware, and socially responsible.
